Barcelona suffers first season defeat in dramatic Clasico loss to Real Madrid
Posted : 30 October 2023
Barcelona was left reeling after their first loss of the season, a 2-1 defeat to arch-rivals Real Madrid in a dramatic Clasico showdown. The champions took an early 1-0 lead just six minutes into the game, marking the second-fastest goal in 21st-century meetings between the two teams.
Barcelona controlled the match entirely but saw their hopes crumble as Jude Bellingham netted twice, including a devastating 92nd-minute goal, securing a 2-1 victory for Real Madrid. This loss now places Barcelona four points behind their rivals at the top of the table.
Emotions ran high as some Barcelona players expressed frustration with the refereeing, particularly regarding a potential penalty when Aurelien Tchouameni allegedly pushed Ronald Araujo wide, which could have given Barcelona a 0-2 lead.
Nevertheless, other voices, like Gavi's, directed criticism towards their own performance. Gavi emphasized the importance of small details in these high-stakes matches, acknowledging that Barcelona had controlled the game until Real Madrid's equalizer changed the course of the match. Despite the disappointment, Gavi remained optimistic about the long season ahead and the opportunity to bounce back.
Barcelona's manager, Xavi, also shared his frustration, highlighting the excellent 60 minutes they had during the match. He emphasized that they controlled the game and deserved to win but were let down by their inability to convert numerous scoring opportunities. Despite the disappointment of losing to Real Madrid at home, Xavi stressed the need to keep pushing forward, considering the long season and many more games to come.
Defender Ronald Araujo couldn't accept the non-award of a penalty, insisting that he was pushed by Tchouameni, which denied him a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Araujo believed that at the very least, a VAR check should have been conducted. Barcelona now faces the challenge of regrouping for their upcoming matches, including an away game against Sociedad in the Spanish league and a Champions League clash against Shakhtar, where they currently maintain a perfect record.
