Barcelona Suffer Controversial 1-0 Defeat to Real Sociedad

Posted : 11 November 2024

Barcelona suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad on Sunday, a result that handed the LaLiga leaders their second loss of the season. The game was marred by controversy when Robert Lewandowski's early goal was disallowed. The Polish striker's effort, which came from a rebound, was ruled offside after a VAR review, sparking a heated debate over the decision. The defeat leaves Barcelona still at the top of the table, but with only a six-point lead over Real Madrid, who have a game in hand.

The absence of teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who was sidelined due to an ankle injury sustained during their Champions League match against Red Star Belgrade, was keenly felt. Without Yamal's creative spark, Barcelona struggled to break down a resilient Real Sociedad defense. This marked the first time this season that the Catalans failed to score in any competition, highlighting their offensive struggles against a well-organized Basque side. Dani Olmo, who started on the bench, and Pau Cubarsi, playing with a protective mask after a facial injury, were notable absentees from the starting lineup.

Lewandowski's disallowed goal became a focal point of the match. Initially, the Polish forward appeared to have put Barcelona ahead, but the referee, following a VAR intervention, ruled him offside. The decision raised eyebrows as Lewandowski seemed level with Real Sociedad defender Nayef Aguerd. The semi-automated offside technology suggested the front of Lewandowski's boot was beyond the line, but Spanish pundits questioned whether the system had misjudged Aguerd's heel as part of Lewandowski's foot, adding to the ongoing debate about the accuracy of the technology.

With the goal ruled out, Real Sociedad capitalized on their momentum. Sheraldo Becker scored the decisive goal in the 33rd minute, finishing calmly after Luka Sucic's assist. Despite the introduction of Dani Olmo at halftime in an attempt to rejuvenate Barcelona's attack, the visitors struggled to impose themselves. Real Sociedad continued to create chances, with Becker and Ander Barrenetxea both missing opportunities to extend the lead. Ultimately, Barcelona's prolific scoring form deserted them in San Sebastian, as they failed to pose any significant threat in the closing stages of the match.
