Barcelona stuns Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 in Champions League quarterfinal first leg

Posted : 11 April 2024

Barcelona's coach, Xavi Hernandez, celebrated his team's 3-2 victory against Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal, emphasizing the resurgence of Barcelona's ability to compete at the highest level in European football. Xavi praised his team's performance, highlighting their comprehensive preparation and effectiveness both defensively and offensively, which culminated in substitute Andreas Christensen's decisive header in the 77th minute at the Parc des Princes.

The match saw Raphinha initially give Barcelona the lead at halftime, only for PSG to swiftly respond with goals from Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha in the opening minutes of the second half. However, Raphinha's equalizer, followed by Christensen's winner, secured a remarkable victory for Barcelona against one of Europe's top teams, showcasing their defensive resilience and tactical astuteness.

Xavi acknowledged the enormity of the victory, emphasizing the challenge of facing PSG, but also expressed cautious optimism, recognizing that the tie is only halfway through and anticipating a tough encounter in the return leg at Montjuic. Despite this, Barcelona's resurgence under Xavi has been evident, with the team unbeaten in 12 games since his announcement of departure at the end of the season.

While Barcelona's resurgence is evident, PSG faced disappointment as they suffered their first defeat since November. Coach Luis Enrique remained optimistic about PSG's chances, believing they can overturn the deficit in the return leg, emphasizing the team's resilience and track record in away matches. Despite the setback, Enrique remained focused on rectifying the "little details" that influenced the outcome, confident in PSG's ability to turn the tie in their favour.
