Barcelona signs Ilkay Gundogan as free agent, official introduction date to be announced
Posted : 26 June 2023
Barcelona made a significant signing with the official announcement on Monday that Ilkay Gundogan has joined the club on a two-year deal, with an option for another season. The contract includes a €340 million release clause, and Barcelona will soon reveal the date for his official introduction.
Last week, it was reported that Gundogan had finalized the terms with Barcelona under the leadership of Xavi and had undergone medical tests ahead of the transfer. The 32-year-old midfielder ended his contract with Manchester City, with whom he won the Champions League, last summer. Despite receiving several offers, including an improved contract from his former club, Gundogan chose to make the move to Barcelona on a free transfer.
The only potential obstacle for Gundogan's signing at Barcelona was the team's compliance with Financial Fair Play rules. However, the club has resolved its affairs, and the transfer has now become official. Gundogan becomes the second player to join Barcelona this summer, following the signing of Inigo Martinez.
Apart from Barcelona, Gundogan received numerous offers from various clubs, including Manchester City, where he has played for the past seven years. Offers also came from Arsenal and the Saudi league, but ultimately, he decided to join Camp Nou.
Gundogan has been a part of Manchester City since 2016, even captaining the team. In the previous season, he scored 9 goals and provided 11 assists in 51 appearances across all competitions under the guidance of Pep Guardiola.
Following the official announcement, Gundogan bid farewell to Manchester City, expressing his gratitude: "After seven wonderful years, our time together has come to an end. With you, I discovered what my dreams were. You will forever be in my heart, and I will always be a part of City. Nothing can sever the bond between us; this is love at the highest level. I will remain blue forever. Thank you, Manchester City."
