Barcelona have officially announced the acquisition of forward Vitor Roque from Athletico-PR for a transfer fee of approximately €40 million ($44 million).
The Catalan club had already reached an agreement with the Brazilian club, and the 18-year-old Roque has signed a contract with Barcelona that runs until the end of the 2030-31 season.
He is expected to join his new teammates in the summer of next year. Roque's release clause has been set at €500 million.
This marks Barcelona's third signing during the current summer transfer window, following the arrivals of Ilkay Gundogan and Inigo Martinez as free agents, following the expiration of their contracts with Manchester City and Athletic Club, respectively.
Given that Robert Lewandowski will turn 35 in August, Barcelona prioritized the search for a backup option and potential successor to the Polish striker.
According to reporters, Roque emerged as Barcelona's primary target in June, and negotiations, led by sporting director Deco, progressed rapidly afterward.
Roque garnered attention through his impressive performances for Athletico and the Brazilian youth teams.
He contributed significantly to his club's run to the Copa Libertadores final last season and recently made his senior debut for the national team.
In his 65 appearances for Athletico, the teenager has scored 22 goals, including six in his last six games. When asked about Roque's capabilities, Barcelona president Laporta expressed confidence, stating that the young forward possesses a unique style.
Laporta compared him to the likes of legendary Brazilian strikers Ronaldo and Romario but highlighted Roque's deadly finishing ability with both feet inside the penalty area. He praised the teenager's potential, power, and Brazilian flair, emphasizing that Roque brings something different to the club.
