Barcelona halt January move for Chelsea midfielder Chukwuemeka transfer

Posted : 16 October 2024

Hansi Flick has decided against Barcelona's potential acquisition of Carney Chukwuemeka during the upcoming winter transfer window.

Barcelona's sporting director, Deco, had been exploring options to strengthen the midfield this January, with Chukwuemeka high on the list. The Catalan club had shown interest in the young Anglo-Nigerian midfielder during the summer but couldn't secure the deal. They were hoping to revisit the move in January, but that plan now seems unlikely.

Reports suggest that Flick is comfortable with his current midfield lineup. He has reliable options like Pedri, Gavi, Frankie De Jong, Fermín Lopez, Marc Bernal, and Marc Casadó. Additionally, versatile defenders Erik Garcia and Andreas Christensen can step into midfield roles when needed.

Chukwuemeka, meanwhile, has only made a single appearance for Chelsea this season. He seems to be outside the plans of Chelsea's head coach, Enzo Maresca, who indicated over the summer that Chukwuemeka would need to find another club for more consistent playing time.

AC Milan had also shown interest in Chukwuemeka in the last transfer window, but Chelsea hesitated to let him join the Italian side. Concerns were raised about his potential game time there, leading to a halt in negotiations.

Despite the setback, reports from Blues insider Simon Phillips suggest that AC Milan remains keen on the 20-year-old midfielder. They have recently been in contact with Chukwuemeka's representatives, keeping the possibility of a move open.

Although Barcelona has withdrawn their interest, Chukwuemeka may still find new opportunities to showcase his talent, possibly with AC Milan if discussions progress favorably.
