Barcelona, currently leading La Liga, have suffered two defeats this season, both of which came when teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal was absent from the starting lineup. The 17-year-old winger has become an integral part of the team’s attacking strategy, and his absence for Saturday’s match against Celta Vigo due to an ankle injury leaves coach Hansi Flick facing a significant challenge. Barcelona's struggles without Yamal have been evident, with their only other losses occurring during his absence, including a 4-2 defeat to Osasuna in September when he was rested.
Yamal’s impact was clear even in that game, as he came on as a substitute and scored a brilliant late goal, underlining his importance. Since then, he has started every match until a recent injury kept him out of a 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad. Flick's attempt to adjust by placing Raphinha on the left and using Fermin Lopez on the right failed to create enough chances, even though Barcelona had scored 40 goals in their previous 12 league matches. Flick acknowledged the team's struggle, stating that in the final third, they weren’t making the right decisions without Yamal’s influence.
With Dani Olmo reportedly back from injury, he could add the necessary creativity in the final third to support Robert Lewandowski, who is currently La Liga’s top scorer with 14 goals. However, Lewandowski too has failed to score in the games where Yamal hasn’t played, illustrating the critical role the teenager plays in their attacking play. Yamal’s ability to attract defenders with his pace and skill allows Lewandowski more space, while his link-up play with Raphinha, particularly during counter-attacks, has been a highlight for Barcelona this season.
As Barcelona face Celta Vigo, who sit 11th in the table and boast former Barcelona defender Marcos Alonso, Flick may need to consider other tactical changes. With Ferran Torres also sidelined, he could opt for Pau Victor to fill in for Yamal or shift Pablo Torre into attacking midfield, moving Olmo to the left wing and Raphinha to the right. Barcelona will be aiming for a win that could extend their lead over Real Madrid, while Celta Vigo, despite being competitive against top teams, will be looking to disrupt the leaders at home.
