Barcelona claimed a crucial 1-0 win against Alaves, with Robert Lewandowski scoring the only goal of the match. The victory allowed the Catalans to capitalize on the defending champions’ slip-up earlier in the day when Real Madrid were held by Espanyol.
With the win, Barcelona kept their hopes alive in the tight race for second place, just three points behind Atletico Madrid, who will face Real Madrid in an upcoming derby that could further impact the standings.
The match itself was a challenging affair for Barcelona, as Alaves offered stiff resistance throughout the game. Despite Barcelona’s dominance in possession, they struggled to create significant chances in the first half. Lewandowski came close on a few occasions but was thwarted by the Alaves defense.
However, the breakthrough came in the 61st minute when Lewandowski finished a cross-shot from Lamine Yamal, marking his 18th league goal of the season, and extending his lead as the division's top scorer. Barcelona’s head coach, Hansi Flick, praised Lewandowski’s poaching ability, calling him the best number nine in the box.
Despite Barcelona’s late pressure, including a curling shot from Ferran Torres that was saved by Alaves goalkeeper Jesus Owono, they couldn’t find a second goal. Alaves, with few attacking threats, failed to capitalize on any opportunities, allowing Barcelona to hold on for the win.
In other La Liga action, Athletic Bilbao secured a 2-2 draw at Real Betis, coming from behind twice, while Osasuna earned a 2-1 win against Real Sociedad, who are struggling with poor form.
