The UEFA Women's Champions League witnessed an exhilarating start as defending champions Barcelona secured a commanding 5-0 win against Benfica at the Estadi Johan Cruyff. Alexia Putellas, who scored twice, and Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati contributed to Barcelona's dominant performance. In other matches, Lyon dominated Slavia Prague with a 9-0 victory, while Eintracht Frankfurt triumphed over Rosengard 2-1.
Barcelona faced initial challenges as Jessica Silva tested them early on, but they swiftly gained momentum. Alexia Putellas opened the scoring after 15 minutes, heading in a deflected shot from Caroline Graham Hansen. However, Putellas appeared to sustain an injury during the goal celebration, requiring treatment and eventually being substituted.
Despite Benfica's early pressure, Barcelona doubled their lead before halftime. María Pilar Leon's precise cross found Esmee Brugts, who headed the ball down for Putellas to tap in. Aitana Bonmati extended the lead with a powerful finish just before halftime, capitalizing on a brilliant cross from Graham Hansen.
Post-match, Bonmati expressed her joy at the team's stellar start in the UEFA Women's Champions League. She stated, "It's good to start the season of the Champions League like this with our people here and scoring five goals. This is our goal today, and we'll keep going for more."
Bonmati continued her goal-scoring prowess in the second half, receiving another assist from Graham Hansen to fire into the bottom-left corner. The hosts sealed their 5-0 victory in the 60th minute with a remarkable overhead kick from Asisat Oshoala, capping off a fantastic opening performance in the tournament.
