Barcelona Dominate Real Sociedad to Reclaim La Liga Lead

Posted : 03 March 2025

Barcelona reclaimed the top spot in La Liga with a commanding 4-0 victory over Real Sociedad on Sunday. The game shifted in the Catalan side's favor early on when Aritz Elustondo received a red card for pulling down Dani Olmo in the 17th minute.

Gerard Martin opened the scoring in the 25th minute, followed by Marc Casado doubling the lead four minutes later. Ronald Araujo and Robert Lewandowski added further goals in the second half, sealing a dominant performance ahead of Barcelona’s crucial Champions League fixture against Benfica.

Coach Hansi Flick acknowledged that the red card played a key role in his team’s dominance but praised their overall performance. He reiterated Barcelona’s commitment to competing for La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions League.

The team created several chances, with Pedri Gonzalez hitting the crossbar and Lamine Yamal setting up key plays. Despite Real Sociedad's initial attacking threats, Barcelona controlled the game after gaining a numerical advantage.

Araujo, who has struggled to reclaim a regular starting spot after a knee injury, expressed his joy in contributing to the team’s success. He scored Barcelona’s third goal by heading in a rebound after Lewandowski’s effort was saved.

The Polish striker later added the fourth with a clever finish, taking his tally to 21 goals in 25 league appearances. Araujo emphasized the importance of squad depth in Barcelona’s pursuit of multiple trophies this season.

Real Sociedad defender Javi Lopez admitted that the red card was a turning point, making it difficult to compete against Barcelona. Meanwhile, Valencia played out a thrilling 3-3 draw against Osasuna, with Nigerian striker Umar Sadiq scoring a stunning backheel volley to salvage a point. Elsewhere, Alaves drew 1-1 at Mallorca, while Leganes secured a 1-0 win over Getafe to create a gap above the relegation zone.
