Barcelona consider Rafa Márquez as potential coach successor

Posted : 17 April 2024

Former Mexico international Rafa Márquez, initially considered as an interim option, is now emerging as a leading candidate to succeed Xavi Hernández as Barcelona's coach, according to a source. The shift in perception comes amidst growing support within the club for Márquez, following Barça's Champions League exit against Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite initially being viewed as a caretaker option if Xavi did not see out the season, Márquez, currently in charge of Barcelona's B team, is now considered a long-term option. This shift in perspective is partly due to the club's economic constraints, which limit their ability to attract experienced coaches and undertake significant squad rebuilding in the upcoming transfer window.

Barcelona's financial limitations, which may lead to difficulties in signing new players and potential sales of key assets like defender Ronald Araújo, make Márquez a more viable option as he would face fewer obstacles in squad management. However, there are reservations within the club regarding Márquez's public campaign positioning himself as Xavi's successor and his association with a Mexican betting company.

While there were hopes within the club that Xavi would reconsider his decision to leave, sources indicate that he remains committed to departing at the end of the season. Despite considering various coaching options, including experienced names like Hansi Flick and Thomas Tuchel, Barcelona's president Joan Laporta faces challenges in securing his preferred choices like Pep Guardiola and Jürgen Klopp.

As a result, Márquez's chances of securing the role permanently have increased recently, given the complexities involved in appointing coaches who are currently employed elsewhere.
