Barcelona Aims for Champions League Progress with Yamal Leading the Charge in Lisbon

Barcelona's previous visit to Benfica ended in a painful 3-0 defeat that saw them eliminated from the Champions League group stages in 2021, but this time the atmosphere around the Catalan club is much more positive. With 17-year-old Lamine Yamal leading the charge, Barcelona are now poised to advance to the last 16 of the competition, sitting second in their group behind leaders Liverpool. A victory in Lisbon on Tuesday will secure their progression, avoiding the new play-off phase.

Under previous manager Ronald Koeman, Barcelona faced a rough patch, culminating in his dismissal following that heavy defeat in Lisbon.

 

Successor Xavi Hernandez was able to steady the ship but ultimately left the club in 2024, still struggling to reach their former glory. Despite these challenges, Xavi's influence helped develop young Yamal, who is now one of the brightest talents in European football under the management of Hansi Flick.

 

Flick's team has made notable strides, including impressive wins against top clubs like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Financial difficulties continue to plague the club, as seen in the Dani Olmo registration issue, but Barcelona's performances on the pitch show they still have the potential to compete with Europe's best.

 

Yamal, often compared to Barcelona legend Lionel Messi, has been a standout performer, showing no signs of slowing down after helping Spain to Euro 2024 glory.

 

Yamal's ability and contribution to the team have been crucial, contributing nine goals and 13 assists in 25 games across all competitions. His presence has been missed during periods when he was sidelined, with Barcelona struggling in his absence.

 

 Coach Flick has praised Yamal's development, noting his consistency in big matches. With Barcelona looking to seal their qualification for the Champions League knockout stages in Lisbon, Yamal’s continued growth will be key to their ambitions of reclaiming their spot among Europe's elite.
