Barca top Women's Champions League group, Arsenal shock Bayern

Posted : 19 December 2024

Barcelona, the reigning Women's Champions League holders, defeated Manchester City 3-0 on Wednesday, securing the top spot in their group. This dominant performance ensured that they finished ahead of City, who had previously been in first place.

Meanwhile, Arsenal pulled off a thrilling 3-2 comeback against Bayern Munich in Group C, clinching the top position thanks to a late penalty from Mariona Caldentey. The dramatic victory sent them through as group winners, with Bayern finishing second.

In Barcelona, the hosts took control early, with Claudia Pina opening the scoring just before halftime. The three-time champions, who had already qualified for the quarterfinals, continued to press, and Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas sealed the win in the second half, ensuring they finished top of Group D.

Bonmati, reflecting on the match, acknowledged that while Barcelona had numerous opportunities to extend their lead, they were pleased with their performance. “We had lots of goal chances. The result could've been far more clear-cut,” she said, adding that securing the top spot was what mattered most.

Both Barcelona and City had already secured quarterfinal berths, but the outcome of this match was crucial for determining which team would receive a more favorable draw in the knockout stages. Barcelona’s dominant display made a strong case for them being the team to avoid in the next round.

The game saw Barcelona create several early opportunities, with players like Salma Paralluelo, Ewa Pajor, and Esmee Brugts testing City’s defense. Despite this, goalkeeper Khiara Keating kept Manchester City in the game with some excellent saves, preventing the scoreline from being more lopsided.

After Pina’s opener, even though City were behind, they still held on to the top spot due to their 2-0 win over Barcelona earlier in the group stage. However, Barcelona was determined to correct their earlier loss. Bonmati's second-half goal, followed by Putellas’ deflected strike, secured the victory and confirmed their place as group winners. In other results, Sweden’s Hammarby beat St Poelten 2-1 to finish third in their group.
