Balogun urges Rangers to focus on UEL quarterfinal challenge

Posted : 11 April 2025

Leon Balogun, the central defender for Rangers, was selected to attend the pre-match press conference ahead of their UEFA Europa League quarterfinal clash against Athletic Club at Ibrox. This suggests that the Nigerian international is in contention for a starting spot in the upcoming match.

Balogun watched from the sidelines as Rangers suffered a 2-0 defeat to Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership on April 5, marking their fifth consecutive home loss at Ibrox. Despite their domestic struggles, the team has had a strong run in the Europa League this season.

Rangers have secured impressive victories over teams like Malmo, FCSB, OGC Nice, and Fenerbahce. Their only setback came in a narrow 2-1 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford. These performances highlight the team's potential in European competition.

Speaking ahead of their clash with Athletic Club, Balogun emphasized the need for focus and composure. He stressed the importance of separating their European ambitions from their domestic form, stating that the upcoming quarterfinal presents a massive opportunity for both the players and the club.

In comments shared on Rangers' official website, Balogun said, "We were all pretty clear that we’re now in a quarter-final. This is separate from what’s happening domestically, and we need to focus on that." He added that the opportunity at hand is significant for both the players and the club’s future.

Balogun also mentioned that the atmosphere in training had been positive in the days leading up to the match. The squad is fully aware of the importance of the upcoming game, but he emphasized that the focus would be on the European challenge for now, with domestic issues to be addressed later.

Facing a technically skilled and dangerous Athletic Club team, Balogun acknowledged the challenge ahead. "It’ll be tough tomorrow as they have some real quality in attack, but this is what you embrace," he said. Balogun, who was part of the Rangers squad that reached the 2022 Europa League final, remains determined to help the team achieve success in this year's competition.
