Nigeria's second-string goalkeeper, Adeleye Adebayo, has utilized his social media platform to convey solidarity towards Francis Uzoho, the goalkeeper for Omonoia FC, who has been receiving criticism from Nigerian soccer enthusiasts.
The goalkeeper, who plays in the Israeli Premier League, posted a picture of himself alongside his senior colleague on his Instagram story, extending his support during a period of intense criticism faced by Uzoho.
According to previous reports by Punch, the 24-year-old goalkeeper has been facing scrutiny due to consecutive costly errors during international friendly matches of the Super Eagles against Saudi Arabia and Mozambique.
In the match against Saudi Arabia, Uzoho unintentionally deflected a ball into his own net from a set piece, resulting in Roberto Mancini’s team taking the lead in a game that eventually concluded in a 2-2 draw.
Additionally, the former APOEL goalkeeper had difficulty stopping a low strike by Geny Catamo, leading to conceding the first goal to Mozambique.
These performances have triggered criticism from fans, casting doubt on Uzoho's capabilities and suitability to start for Nigeria in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
However, despite the criticism, the head coach of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro, has publicly supported and defended his goalkeeper.
In the wake of this, Adeleye has joined Moses Simon, a forward from FC Nantes, and their Portuguese manager in expressing their support for Uzoho during this challenging period.
Nonetheless, Uzoho's recurring errors are now causing uncertainty about his potential as a starter as Nigeria prepares for the AFCON tournament.
