Awoniyi urges teammates to prove they are Super Eagles

Posted : 05 September 2024

Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi is optimistic that the Super Eagles can overcome their recent struggles as they prepare for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Despite a challenging period, Awoniyi believes the team has the potential to turn things around and achieve positive results.

The Super Eagles have had a difficult run recently, securing only one win in their last five matches. This stretch of poor form includes their defeat to Ivory Coast in the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations held in February. Since then, they won a friendly against Ghana in March, but followed it up with a loss to Mali and a defeat to Benin, coupled with a 1-1 draw against South Africa in the World Cup qualifiers in June.

Awoniyi has been sidelined due to recurring injuries, missing crucial games including the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year. His last appearance was in a World Cup qualifying match against Lesotho in November, but he is now fit and has been included in the squad for the upcoming fixtures.

The striker, formerly of Liverpool, expressed his belief that the Super Eagles can overcome their recent setbacks and secure victories against their upcoming opponents, Benin and Rwanda. He emphasized the importance of showing their true capabilities on the field and reaffirming their status as a top team.

Awoniyi reassured Nigerian fans that despite the team’s recent performances, they remain committed to proving their worth. He encouraged supporters to continue their backing, stressing that the team’s focus is on delivering their best performances in the upcoming matches.

He highlighted that both he and Victor Boniface have already arrived in camp, with Kelechi Iheanacho joining today and Victor Osimhen yet to report. The decision on who will lead the attack against the Cheetahs on Saturday is still pending, with Austin Eguavoen set to make the final call.

Awoniyi’s confidence and readiness to contribute are a positive sign for the Super Eagles as they look to regain their momentum and make a strong statement in the qualifiers.
