AWCO 2024: Super Falcons qualify for second round without kicking a ball
Posted : 18 September 2023
The Super Falcons of Nigeria have qualified for the second round of the Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) qualifiers courtesy of the withdrawal of Sao Tome and Principe from the 2024 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) first round.
The Central African nation's football association notified the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) about their inability to honour the two encounters slated to take place on September 22 and 26 of this month.
Their withdrawal means that the Super Falcons have cruised into the second round of the qualifiers, where they will face the winner of the fixture between Cape Verde and Liberia at the second-round stage slated for the period November 27th–December 5th.
The winner will compete at WAFCON 2024, which will be hosted by Morocco.
The Super Falcons finished in fourth place at the last edition of the competition, also hosted by Morocco last year.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had released the list of 24 players to face the Sao Tome ladies on September 15.
It is not clear at press time what the decision of the NFF would be, as some of the players have started arriving in the country to begin camping in Lagos ahead of the first leg, which was slated to be held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos this Friday.
