Australia Claims Convincing Victory Over China in Olympic Send-off Match

Posted : 03 June 2024

Real Madrid's Hayley Raso and Everton's Clare Wheeler led Australia to a 2-0 victory over Asian champions China in front of a crowd of 76,798 fans at their final home match before the Olympics. With the Tokyo Games and the 2023 World Cup both ending in fourth-place finishes for the Matildas, the team under Tony Gustavsson is determined to achieve better results in Paris.

Following an uneventful 1-1 friendly draw with China in Adelaide last week, a nearly full-strength Australian team took to the field at Sydney's Stadium Australia. Wheeler struck early in the second half, followed by Raso, who showcased her dynamic play to extend the lead after 58 minutes, providing a winning conclusion to their preparations for France.

As Gustavsson prepares to announce his 18-player Olympic squad, the only injury concern lies with Arsenal striker Caitlin Foord, who sat out Monday's match due to a hamstring issue. Despite the retirement of veteran goalkeeper Lydia Williams after 104 caps, the Matildas dominated the first half, eventually breaking through China's defense in the second half to secure victory.
