Midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni has been appointed as the captain of the French national team for their upcoming Nations League match against Israel on Thursday, following Kylian Mbappe's decision to miss the games. The French Football Federation announced Tchouameni's leadership role on Wednesday, highlighting his importance to the squad.
Kylian Mbappe, who usually wears the captain's armband, will not participate in the Nations League fixtures against Israel and Belgium. Tchouameni was among the candidates for the captaincy, alongside fullback Jules Kounde and goalkeeper Mike Maignan, showcasing his growing prominence within the team.
This decision comes amid criticism of Mbappe for opting out of the double-header matches in Budapest and Brussels, despite being fit to play for his club, Real Madrid, after joining as a free agent from Paris Saint-Germain. Following the match against Israel, France, currently ranked second in Group A2, will face Belgium on Monday.
