Atubolu seeks Freiburg records before Bundesliga's international pause

Posted : 28 February 2025

Noah Atubolu, the young goalkeeper for SC Freiburg, is poised to potentially etch his name into Bundesliga history before the upcoming international break in March. He's currently chasing not one, but two significant records that highlight his exceptional performance between the posts.

One remarkable achievement already under his belt is his ability to save four consecutive penalties. This feat, a first for the Bundesliga since 2014, places him alongside former Bayer Leverkusen stalwart Bernd Leno. Atubolu has also joined a select group of elite goalkeepers, including Frank Rost, Hans Jörg Butt, and Thomas Zander, who have accomplished this feat in the past.

The significance of Atubolu's accomplishment is amplified by the fact that he is the only active Bundesliga goalkeeper among this group. This presents him with a unique opportunity to set a new record when SC Freiburg faces Augsburg. A successful penalty save in this match would solidify his place as the sole holder of this impressive achievement.

Beyond his penalty-saving prowess, Atubolu is also on the verge of setting a new club record for consecutive minutes without conceding a goal. He has currently maintained a clean sheet for 400 minutes, a streak that began after Bayern Munich's Min-jae Kim scored against Freiburg.

To surpass the current record held by Richard Golz, Atubolu needs to maintain his clean sheet for another 110 minutes. This would establish him as the SC Freiburg goalkeeper with the longest streak of not conceding in the Bundesliga, a testament to his consistent defensive performance.

Throughout his 20 Bundesliga appearances this season, Atubolu has recorded eight clean sheets. This equates to a 40 percent clean sheet rate, a statistic that places him among the league's top goalkeepers. Only Péter Gulácsi and Manuel Neuer boast higher clean sheet percentages, highlighting Atubolu's impressive start to his Bundesliga career.
