Atubolu, once targeted by Super Eagles coaches, suffers injury

Posted : 01 April 2025

Noah Atubolu, the record-breaking goalkeeper, will be sidelined indefinitely due to a shoulder injury. The news was confirmed by SC Freiburg, the Bundesliga club he plays for, through an official statement on Tuesday.

Atubolu, who represents Germany at the U21 level and has Nigerian heritage, sustained the injury during a clash with his teammate Philipp Lienhart. This occurred during Freiburg's 2-1 loss to Union Berlin on Sunday. Atubolu was substituted out of the game in the 58th minute due to the injury.

Earlier this year, Atubolu made history by becoming the first Freiburg goalkeeper to go 510 minutes without conceding a goal. This remarkable feat broke the previous record of 509 minutes set by club legend Richard Golz during the 2001-2002 season.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper has been impressive this season, earning ten clean sheets in 24 Bundesliga appearances, showcasing his skill and consistency. His performances have earned him recognition as one of the best goalkeepers in Germany’s top flight.

Born in Freiburg im Breisgau, Atubolu has a unique background, with a German mother and a Nigerian father. Despite being eligible to play for both Germany and Nigeria, he has chosen to represent Germany at the international level for now.

His dual-national status has drawn the attention of both Germany’s head coach, Julian Nagelsmann, and former Super Eagles coaches Gernot Rohr and Jose Peseiro. Atubolu, along with Eintracht Frankfurt's Nnamdi Collins, is being closely monitored by Germany for future potential.

With Atubolu unavailable for the time being, Florian Muller is expected to step in as the starting goalkeeper for Freiburg's upcoming home match against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
