Atletico Madrid Poised for Major Boost with Potential Signings of Alvarez, Gallagher

Posted : 11 August 2024

Atletico Madrid's relatively quiet summer transfer window had fans on edge after a fourth-place finish last season, but excitement is building with the potential signings of Julian Alvarez and Conor Gallagher. If these deals go through, Atletico's spending will approach 200 million euros ($218 million), adding to previous acquisitions such as Spain defender Robin Le Normand and last season’s LaLiga top scorer Alexander Sorloth. These new additions are expected to revitalize Diego Simeone’s squad, which has been in need of a boost after two seasons without silverware.

Atletico’s 2023-24 campaign saw them finish a distant fourth in LaLiga and exit the Champions League in the quarterfinals, narrowly missing out to Borussia Dortmund. On a positive note, they managed to hand Real Madrid their only two defeats of the season across all competitions. The club’s recent performance highlights the need for reinforcements, particularly after Spanish striker Alvaro Morata’s move to AC Milan last month.

Julian Alvarez, a standout for Manchester City, and Alexander Sorloth, who scored 23 goals for Villarreal last season, are set to bring new dynamism to Atletico's attack. Alvarez, a versatile forward, and Sorloth, a classic box striker, are seen as key additions. Simeone has expressed optimism about Sorloth’s ability to fill Morata's role and contribute significantly to the team’s offensive efforts. They will join forces with Antoine Griezmann and emerging talent Samuel Lino, while the future of Joao Felix remains uncertain following a disappointing loan spell at Barcelona.

Conor Gallagher, who captained Chelsea last season, is expected to sign a five-year deal with Atletico and become only the second Englishman to play for the club, after Kieran Trippier. Gallagher has already begun training with his new teammates in Madrid. Atletico Madrid will kick off their LaLiga season on August 19, facing Villarreal as they look to make a strong start to their campaign.
