Atletico Madrid, Las Palmas Condemn CSD Ruling on Barcelona Player Registrations

Posted : 10 January 2025

Atletico Madrid expressed strong criticism on Thursday regarding a decision by Spain's national sports council (CSD) to allow Barcelona midfielder Dani Olmo to play temporarily after his license expired. The CSD granted Barcelona a precautionary measure on Wednesday, enabling Olmo and forward Pau Victor to participate while their case against LaLiga and the Spanish football federation's ruling is under review.

Atletico Madrid condemned the move, stating it undermines the integrity of Spanish football and creates a "dangerous precedent" by disregarding established rules.

Barcelona's financial struggles prevented the club from extending the players' short-term licenses under LaLiga's financial fair play regulations. Despite securing a deal in late December to sell VIP seats to Middle Eastern investors, the necessary paperwork was not finalized before the deadline.

In the interim, Barcelona defeated Athletic Bilbao to secure a spot in the Spanish Super Cup final, but the controversy surrounding Olmo and Victor's eligibility drew widespread criticism from LaLiga president Javier Tebas, who described the situation as a "tragicomedy."

Las Palmas also voiced concerns, emphasizing the decision threatens the competition's integrity and could destabilize Spanish football. Tebas noted the CSD’s ruling contradicts its prior decisions and court precedents, raising questions about its consistency. The backlash highlights growing tensions over financial governance and regulatory enforcement within Spanish football.
