Atalanta Stuns Bayer Leverkusen to Win First Europa League Title

Posted : 23 May 2024

Bayer Leverkusen entered the Europa League final in Dublin as clear favorites, boasting an unbeaten streak of 51 games across all competitions this season. The German champions aimed to secure a treble with a victory against Atalanta, followed by the German Cup final on Saturday. However, Atalanta had different plans, delivering a stunning 3-0 victory thanks to a remarkable hat-trick from Ademola Lookman, earning their first-ever European title and their second overall in club history.

Earlier this month, Atalanta had lost to Juventus in the Coppa Italia final, leaving them with only the 1962/63 Coppa Italia in their trophy cabinet. Lookman was in scintillating form from the start, scoring his first goal in the 12th minute, followed by a brilliant solo effort in the 24th minute. He completed his hat-trick in the 75th minute, becoming the first African player to achieve such a feat in a European final, excluding the Supercup. This victory marked the first win by an Italian team in the Europa League since Parma in 1999.

Atalanta 3-0 Bayer Leverkusen: Alonso's unbeaten run ends as Lookman hat-trick settles Europa League final | beIN SPORTS

Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen saw their impressive run come to an abrupt end after 51 unbeaten games. Falling behind for the 13th time this season, they couldn't recover to claim their second European trophy and their first since the UEFA Cup in 1987/88. They will now focus on the German Cup final against Kaiserslautern, hoping to complete a domestic double.

The match saw various critical moments, with Leverkusen creating early chances and Atalanta capitalizing on theirs. Lookman’s first goal came after a well-executed play, and he followed it with another just 12 minutes later. Despite Leverkusen's efforts, including multiple substitutions and attempts on goal, Atalanta's defense held firm. Lookman's third goal sealed the victory, leading to jubilant celebrations for Atalanta and a historic night in Dublin.
