Atalanta signs defender liked by Super Eagles coach

Italian Serie A team Atalanta has made a significant decision regarding promising defender Caleb Okoli, with reports suggesting they are open to considering offers for him, including interest from fellow Italian side Monza.
Monza's CEO, Adriano Galliani, however, is not in a rush to finalize a deal. Okoli, who recently turned 22, has been part of Atalanta since 2016, initially joining their youth system from Vicenza.
His loan spell at Cremonese in Serie B last season was crucial for his development, as he played a key role in their promotion to Serie A after 26 years.
Despite fierce competition for European qualifying spots at Atalanta, Okoli made 17 appearances as the team finished fifth in the league, securing a place in the Europa League.
A potential move to Monza could provide Okoli with the opportunity to establish himself as a key player in their defense.
Monza struggled defensively last season, conceding the most goals among the top 11 teams in the division.
Regular playing time in Serie A could also strengthen the case for the Nigeria Football Federation to convince Okoli to represent the Super Eagles in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Head coach Jose Peseiro has praised Okoli, considering him an appealing defensive option as Nigeria aims to secure their fourth continental crown in January.
