Atalanta Eye Serie A Top Spot in Crucial Clash Against AC Milan

Posted : 05 December 2024

Atalanta will face AC Milan on Friday night, aiming to seize the top spot in Serie A and strengthen their belief that this could be the year they achieve unprecedented Scudetto glory. Currently just one point behind leaders Napoli, Atalanta are targeting a club record-tying ninth consecutive win in Italy’s top flight. For the first time in the club's history, they are genuine title contenders, with the current team looking stronger than ever under coach Gian Piero Gasperini’s guidance.

While Atalanta has never finished higher than third in Serie A, they reached that position three times between 2019 and 2021, during a period of thrilling attacking play led by Josip Ilicic, Duvan Zapata, and Papu Gomez.

The current squad, buoyed by their historic Europa League win last year and currently the league's highest-scoring team with 36 goals, looks capable of pushing even further. They have won 11 of their last 12 matches in all competitions, including a 2-0 victory over Roma, with coach Claudio Ranieri declaring that they are "really ready" to challenge for the title.

A win over Milan would temporarily put Atalanta at the top of the table and equal a Serie A wins record from 2020, a year when the club reached the Champions League quarterfinals and nearly upset Paris Saint-Germain.

Since then, Atalanta has continued to build success both on and off the pitch, including a fully refurbished Gewiss Stadium. Their rise under Gasperini and the support of the Percassi family has made them one of Serie A’s most impressive teams, with a fixture against Real Madrid on Tuesday further highlighting their growing stature.

Milan, who are 10 points behind Napoli, will be hoping to challenge Atalanta despite a mixed start to the season. With recent victories over Slovan Bratislava, Empoli, and Sassuolo, they will look to star player Tijjani Reijnders, who has been in excellent form.

The 26-year-old midfielder scored his seventh goal of the season on Tuesday night and has been a standout performer for Milan, particularly as the team’s consistency has faltered. Reijnders will face tough competition from Atalanta’s midfield, which has been key to their success this season.
