Aston Villa 2-1 Brighton & Hove Albion: Aston Villa secure Europa Conference League spot by beating Brighton
Posted : 28 May 2023
After a 13-year absence, Aston Villa defeated Brighton at a boisterous Villa Park to earn a return to European play.
Villa needed to win in order to finish seventh in the Premier League and qualify for the Europa Conference League play-offs.
The club's Player of the Year, Douglas Luiz, slipped the ball home from Jacob Ramsey's pullback in the eighth minute to give them the lead after Leon Bailey had struck the crossbar.
Deniz Undav's shot gave Brighton the impression that they had scored, however the video assistant referee disallowed Julio Enciso from crossing for a teammate because he was offside.
Undav, though, scored in the 38th minute after Pascal Gross promptly took a free kick; the assistant referee first declared it to be offside, but Stockley Park authorities overturned the ruling.
Villa, who won the European Cup in 1982, last competed in a European match in 2010, losing to Austrian team Rapid Vienna 4-3 on aggregate.
Despite a tense second half versus Brighton, they managed to secure the result they required to elicit cheers from the crowd.
