Asemota joins Aston Villa, departing from Arsenal

Posted : 05 September 2024

Aston Villa has announced the signing of Owen Asemota, a young English goalkeeper of Nigerian heritage, via a statement on the club's official website. Asemota, who had previously been with Arsenal, has chosen to join Aston Villa’s academy after declining a new contract offer from his former club.

Asemota has secured a scholarship deal with Aston Villa and will aim to secure his first professional contract with the club before the conclusion of the 2025-2026 season. This move represents a significant step in his career development.

The goalkeeper's departure from Arsenal was prompted by interest from several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Chelsea, all of which were closely monitoring his situation.

Mark Harrison, Aston Villa's Academy manager, confirmed the high level of interest in Asemota, highlighting that his impressive profile and potential made him a sought-after talent.

At just 16 years old, Asemota is known for his excellent athleticism and ball-handling skills, attributes that align well with Aston Villa’s playing style. His ability to manage the ball and his overall athletic qualities make him a promising addition to the squad.

Asemota will begin his journey at Aston Villa with the U18 team and will gradually transition to the U21 setup as he continues to develop. His progression will be closely watched by the club as he aims to make an impact.

During his time at Arsenal, Asemota trained with the senior goalkeepers and made three appearances in the U18 Premier League before moving on from the north London club.
