Arteta Urges Arsenal to Keep Pressure on Liverpool Despite Setback

Posted : 01 January 2025

Mikel Arteta has urged his Arsenal side to keep pushing to reduce the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool, despite being nine points behind as they approach their New Year's Day match against Brentford. Liverpool have dominated the season so far, winning 14 of their 18 matches, and appear to be the favorites to claim the title that Arsenal had hoped to contest for.

With Manchester City struggling, Arsenal had expected to challenge for the top spot but have been hindered by inconsistent form.

The Gunners are now facing a significant challenge, and Arteta has called on his players to stay focused and fight for every point. In a motivational message ahead of their final match of 2024, Arteta emphasized the need for relentless effort, likening his team’s approach to being like a hammer, persistent in their pursuit.

He also acknowledged that if another team finishes strong, they will congratulate them but remain ready to take advantage if any opportunity arises, referencing the history of title races where top spots were not always secured.

As Arsenal continues their quest to win their first Premier League title since 2004, they will be without star winger Bukayo Saka for an extended period. Saka, who has been a key player this season, will miss at least nine more league matches and other crucial cup fixtures due to a hamstring injury.

His absence is a significant blow for Arteta's squad, but the team will look to Leandro Trossard to fill the gap on the left wing, with Gabriel Martinelli potentially shifting to the right.

Arteta expressed confidence in Trossard’s ability to step up in Saka's absence, praising the Belgian for his versatility and commitment despite his inconsistent playing time. The manager noted Trossard’s competitiveness and drive, qualities that have impressed him since the player joined from Brighton.

Arteta highlighted Trossard’s ability to impact the game in various attacking roles, and his "anger" and "drive" in training, calling it a valuable asset for the team.
