Arteta hopes Saka, Martinelli return after international break

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is optimistic about having Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli back in action when the team faces Fulham on April 1. Their absence has been felt as the club struggles with attacking issues, dropping crucial points in the Premier League title race.  


Both Saka and Martinelli are nursing hamstring injuries, while Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz have been ruled out for the remainder of the season. The Gunners’ depleted frontline has failed to deliver, with their 1-0 defeat to West Ham followed by a goalless draw against Nottingham Forest.  


Arteta acknowledged that even if Saka and Martinelli return after the international break, their reintegration must be handled carefully. He emphasized that their recovery progress over the coming weeks will determine their availability.  


The Spanish coach noted that since both players have been out for an extended period, they would need a gradual transition back into the squad. He confirmed ongoing assessments and hinted that Martinelli might return sooner than Saka, though nothing is certain yet.  


A key medical meeting is scheduled to evaluate their fitness, particularly Martinelli’s progress, before setting a possible return date. The coaching staff remains cautious, ensuring they do not rush either player back too soon.  


Following the draw at Nottingham Forest, Arsenal remains in second place but now trails league leaders Liverpool by 13 points. Their inability to convert chances has been a major concern, affecting their title hopes.  


With a crucial Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven approaching, Arteta must quickly find a solution to Arsenal’s goal-scoring struggles. He acknowledged the need to adapt, especially when facing teams that adopt a deep defensive setup.
