Arteta Hopes for Saka and Martinelli Return as Arsenal Struggles in Attack

Posted : 27 February 2025

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is optimistic about the return of wingers Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli from injury when the team faces Fulham on April 1. The absence of the two key players, both recovering from hamstring issues, has significantly impacted Arsenal’s attacking threat.

Meanwhile, forwards Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz are ruled out for the rest of the season, further complicating Arsenal’s offensive struggles. Their lack of firepower was evident in a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to West Ham United on Saturday, followed by a goalless draw against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.

Despite the hope of reintegrating Saka and Martinelli after the international break, Arteta stressed the importance of carefully managing their return. He acknowledged that both players have been sidelined for an extended period and will need time to regain full match fitness.

"They are evolving well but still a bit far," Arteta explained, adding that Martinelli may return sooner than Saka. A meeting is scheduled to assess their progress, with the club closely monitoring their rehabilitation before making a final decision on their availability.

Arsenal’s draw at Nottingham Forest has left them 13 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, dealing a further blow to their title ambitions. With the team struggling to convert chances, Arteta must find solutions quickly to keep Arsenal’s season on track.

Their lack of attacking fluency has been a major concern, and the absence of key forwards has only exacerbated the issue. The manager remains hopeful that the return of Saka and Martinelli will provide the much-needed spark in attack.

Before facing Fulham, Arsenal will shift focus to their Champions League round of 16 clash against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday. Arteta acknowledged the need for tactical adjustments, particularly against a team likely to defend deep. "We have another day or two to think before the PSV game, all the options that we have, especially against a team that is in a low block," he said. With crucial fixtures ahead, Arsenal must address their attacking shortcomings to stay competitive in both domestic and European competitions.
