Arsenal's Arteta defends goalkeeper rotation decision ahead of Champions League return
Posted : 18 September 2023
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta downplayed his decision to start David Raya instead of Aaron Ramsdale in the goal against Everton on Sunday.
Raya, who joined on loan from Brentford this summer, made his Premier League debut for Arsenal in their 1-0 victory, while Ramsdale had played in all 38 of the Gunners' league games last season.
Arteta explained his rationale, comparing it to other squad rotations. He mentioned Fabio Vieira and Eddie Nketiah playing in certain situations, highlighting the need to utilize the squad's depth.
He emphasized that both Raya and Ramsdale possess tremendous qualities, along with Karl Hein, and that the team needs to use their talents.
Arteta hinted at continuing to rotate the goalkeepers based on the situation, emphasizing that in previous instances, he wanted to change goalkeepers during a match but didn't have the courage to do so.
Now, he feels more confident in making such decisions to maintain or change momentum as needed.
Arsenal is set to make its first Champions League appearance since the 2016-17 season against PSV Eindhoven, followed by a north London derby against Tottenham on Sunday.
Arteta's focus is on keeping all players engaged and ensuring they contribute to the team, regardless of the competition.
