On Tuesday, Arsenal officially announced the signing of English footballer Alessia Russo on a long-term contract. The forward, who will be participating in the Women's World Cup this summer, joins Arsenal as a marquee signing following her departure from Manchester United, where her contract expired.
Arsenal had made two offers for the 24-year-old Russo in January, one of which included a world-record fee. However, both bids were rejected by Manchester United, who had hoped to retain their star striker.
Despite their efforts, Russo became a free agent this summer after contract negotiations broke down. Arsenal faced competition from Lyon and Washington Spirit but emerged victorious in securing her signature.
Expressing her enthusiasm, Russo stated, "I'm really excited to be here and I can't wait to get going. I want to win trophies -- as does everyone in this club. I can't wait to get stuck in and grow as a player. It's a new challenge and a new environment."
Russo has demonstrated her prowess in the Women's Super League and played a crucial role in England's Euro 2022 victory last summer, primarily as an impact substitute. She scored four goals in the tournament, including a memorable backheeled goal against Sweden in the semifinals.
At Arsenal, Russo will strengthen the forward line, which already features players like Vivianne Miedema, Beth Mead, Katie McCabe, Lina Hurtig, Caitlin Foord, and Stina Blackstenius, although Miedema and Mead are currently sidelined due to injury.
Russo expressed her excitement about joining Arsenal, acknowledging the remarkable growth of the women's game, particularly at a prestigious club like Arsenal. She also mentioned the sell-out crowd at the Emirates Stadium during Arsenal's match against Wolfsburg last season.
Russo began her career in Chelsea's academy before playing college football at North Carolina Tar Heels in the United States. She returned to England in 2020, signing with Manchester United, the club she supported as a child. With the England national team, Russo has scored 11 goals in 21 appearances.
