Denmark U17 international Chido Obi-Martin, of Nigerian descent, showcased a stellar performance, earning the Man of the Match award for Arsenal U17s. His remarkable brace led Arsenal to a 2-1 comeback victory over Flamengo in the Flamengo Adidas Cup's opening match in Brazil on December 11.
Jeorge Bird, an expert on Arsenal's youth team, reported that Obi-Martin equalized for Arsenal after Flamengo took an initial lead. The Danish-Nigerian talent demonstrated resilience by converting a penalty, leveling the score, and later securing the game-winning goal by slotting the ball through the goalkeeper's legs.
In addition to Obi-Martin's standout performance, other players with Nigerian backgrounds, including Zac Shuaib, Samuel Chinedu, Ifeoluwa Ibrahim, and Josh Ogunnaike, also featured in the game. However, these players won't be available for the next match against PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Youth League.
Obi-Martin's recent involvement extends beyond the Flamengo Adidas Cup, as he played in the last three UEFA Youth League matches and made his Premier League 2 debut against Brighton & Hove in October 2023. Notably, he gained global attention last month for scoring ten goals for Arsenal U16s in a friendly against Liverpool.
