Arsenal-raised striker Akpom drawing interest from Premier League clubs

Posted : 29 January 2025

Arsenal's Hale End Academy graduate, Chuba Akpom, is reportedly on the move this winter, with Ajax Amsterdam willing to part ways with the striker. According to Sky Sports UK, referencing The Mirror, Akpom could be heading back to England, as several Premier League clubs are showing interest in the player.

Dutch publication De Telegraaf further adds that Leicester City and Ligue 1 side Olympique Marseille are among the clubs keen on acquiring the forward. Akpom had been in high demand after a standout season, winning the Championship Golden Boot in 2022-2023, before ultimately joining Ajax for a fee of 12.3 million euros, which could rise to 14.3 million euros depending on performance-based bonuses.

Despite his high-profile move to Ajax, the 28-year-old has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter, leading to the club considering his departure. Ajax is reportedly looking to reduce their wage bill and is open to offers for the former England youth international, with the striker's future increasingly uncertain.

Previously, Sunderland had expressed interest in bringing Akpom in on loan, but the forward reportedly turned down the opportunity, preferring to explore other options. The Dutch press has indicated that interest from both Leicester and Marseille is genuine, signaling a potential exit for the player.

Reports suggest that Ajax would prefer to see Akpom leave over fellow striker Brian Brobbey, who is reportedly attracting attention from West Ham United. While Brobbey has seen more consistent playing time, Akpom’s lack of regular involvement has made him expendable in Ajax’s eyes.

Since joining Ajax, Akpom has made 67 appearances, scoring 23 goals and registering four assists. However, despite his contributions, he has not been able to secure a starting role in the team's lineup, which has led to frustration and growing speculation about his future.

Last January, Akpom attracted significant interest from Premier League clubs, including Nottingham Forest and Fulham, but Ajax blocked his move back to England. With the current winter transfer window open, it remains to be seen whether the striker will secure a move this time around.
