Arsenal, PSG Youth Surge Sets Stage for Thrilling Champions League Semifinal

Posted : 29 April 2025

Arsenal head into the UEFA Champions League semifinals with strong momentum, having knocked out Real Madrid and now seen as favourites to lift the trophy, holding a 32 percent chance according to the latest projections. Meanwhile, the other semifinal between Inter Milan and Barcelona is expected to be a tight affair, with both clubs given nearly equal odds of advancing to the final.

This season has seen a notable surge in the prominence of young players across the tournament. The current campaign is unique in how many footballers aged 21 or under are not only featuring regularly but also playing crucial roles.

The quarterfinal stage alone saw 20 starts from players in that age bracket — the highest tally since the 2002–03 season. Rising stars like Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly, PSG’s João Neves and Désiré Doué, and Barcelona’s Pau Cubarsí have brought youthful energy and decisive contributions to their teams.

Among the standout young talents is Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, who is poised to become just the second 17-year-old to start in a Champions League semifinal. His influence has been immense, and his presence underscores the significant shift toward youth development at the top level.

PSG, too, exemplify this trend, with one of the youngest squads in the competition. Since moving on from their former attacking trio of Messi, Neymar, and Mbappé, the French club has embraced a youth-first approach under Luis Enrique, which has paid dividends on the continental stage.

Statistically, Arsenal enter the tie with historical and current advantages. They remain unbeaten in five previous meetings with PSG and have already defeated them once this season. PSG, meanwhile, have a poor recent record in away games against English opposition. Arsenal boast an eight-game unbeaten run in the competition and have led for the highest proportion of match time among all teams.

Meanwhile, standout performers like Bukayo Saka and PSG’s Ousmane Dembélé continue to influence matches heavily, with Dembélé closing in on a club record for goal involvements in a single UCL campaign.
