Arsenal legend Jack Wilshere expressed high praise for the talented Nigerian forward Andre Annous following his impressive hat-trick in a thrilling U18 Premier League match against Brighton & Hove. The game ended in a dramatic 3-3 draw at the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre on Saturday, with Annous playing a pivotal role in helping the Gunners secure a point.
Brighton initially took control of the match, establishing a 2-0 lead before the 34th minute. However, Annous demonstrated his skill and determination by scoring his first goal in the 37th minute, reducing the deficit. Just before halftime, he showcased his quick thinking by intercepting a free-kick from Tate Ferdinand and expertly lobbing the ball over the goalkeeper from 35 yards, leveling the score at 2-2.
As the game progressed, Annous continued to be a constant threat. He completed his hat-trick in the 89th minute, providing Arsenal with a brief lead. Unfortunately for the Gunners, Tyler Silsby equalized for Brighton in the sixth minute of stoppage time, ensuring both teams shared the points in a hard-fought encounter.
Annous has made an impressive start to the season, tallying seven goal involvements, including five goals and two assists, in his first four U18 Premier League matches. His performance has drawn attention and admiration from coaches and fans alike, solidifying his status as a promising player within the academy.
Wilshere, reflecting on Annous's performance after the match, highlighted the player's exceptional qualities as a team player. He emphasized that Annous embodies the essence of teamwork, consistently giving his all on the pitch and making unselfish runs to support his teammates.
The former Arsenal midfielder pointed out specific moments during the game where Annous could have opted for personal glory but instead chose to assist others, demonstrating his selflessness. Wilshere noted, "When you work that hard and apply yourself not just in games but every day in training, you get your reward."
Having made his debut in the U18 Premier League during his final season as a schoolboy, Annous has now accumulated eleven appearances in the division. Following a recent stint as a non-playing substitute in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, the Hale End Academy graduate is eager to make his competitive debut for Arsenal's U21s in the upcoming weeks.
