Arsenal goalkeeper eligible for Super Eagles, Black Stars debuts for England U18s

Posted : 24 March 2025

Arsenal's talented goalkeeper, Khari Ranson, has earned his first cap for England’s U18 team. Born in London, Ranson is eligible to represent both the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Black Stars of Ghana, thanks to his Nigerian father and Ghanaian mother.

Despite his African roots, Ranson has committed to representing England at youth level, having already featured for their U16 team before making his debut for the U18s in a match against France on Saturday. The English Football Association has been ahead in the pursuit of Ranson, who continues to rise through the ranks of English youth football.

Ranson’s first appearance for the U18s came after a substitution by Young Lions coach Liam Bramley. He replaced Chelsea's Jack Austin during the break. England had already secured a two-goal lead, courtesy of goals from Leo Shahar and Joshua Sonni-Lambie in the first 16 minutes of the match.

However, Ranson's debut did not unfold as smoothly as expected. In a brief five-minute period, he conceded two goals, allowing Enzo Molebe to halve the deficit in the 71st minute and then equalize in the 76th. Despite this setback, the debut was valuable experience for the young goalkeeper.

Also featured in the match was Chukwuemeka Adiele, a West Ham United player of Nigerian descent. Adiele made a significant impact, playing a key role in England’s first goal by providing a well-timed assist for Leo Shahar to open the scoring.

Ranson is not the only Nigerian descent player in the Young Lions setup, with several others like Andre Annous, Ife Ibrahim, Joshua Ogunnaike, and Samuel Onyekachukwu also securing scholarship deals with Arsenal ahead of the 2024-2025 season. These young talents are expected to contribute significantly to their respective clubs and national teams in the future.

Interestingly, Ranson’s football journey began in different positions. Initially a holding midfielder and central defender, he transitioned into the goalkeeper role when his team needed someone to fill in. His quick adaptation to the position and natural talent have made him one of the most promising young goalkeepers in English football today.
