Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Manchester City Secure Spots in Women's Champions League Quarterfinals

Posted : 22 November 2024

Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City all secured their spots in the Women's Champions League quarterfinals on Thursday, with Arsenal delivering a dramatic win over Juventus. A late 89th-minute goal from Lina Hurtig sealed a 1-0 victory for Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, giving them three wins from four matches in Group C. Juventus, who remained on three points, can no longer catch Arsenal or Bayern, confirming both teams' progress to the next stage.

Bayern Munich also advanced despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Valerenga in Norway. The result briefly delayed their qualification, but Juventus’ defeat ensured Bayern's progression. Bayern leads the group with 10 points, one ahead of Arsenal, with the two teams set to face off in England on December 18 to decide the group winner. In their October encounter, Bayern triumphed 5-2, with Pernille Harder scoring a late hat-trick.

Manchester City also moved forward with a 2-1 win over Hammarby in Stockholm. Khadija Shaw scored both goals for City, one in the first half and another shortly after Hammarby's equalizer in the second. Shaw praised the atmosphere created by the 20,000-strong crowd but noted that City stuck to their strengths to secure the victory. With four wins from four games, Manchester City topped their group with 12 points, three ahead of Barcelona, who had a comfortable 4-1 win over St Poelten.

Barcelona is now closing in on the knockout stages after defeating St Poelten, with Francisca Nazareth scoring twice in the first half and Vicky Lopez adding a third. Alexia Putellas marked her 200th goal for Barcelona, completing a team move with a finish in the 57th minute. Barcelona, despite a surprising loss to Manchester City in their opener, has since been dominant in their group.
