Arsenal insider Charles Watts has advocated for Arsenal to pursue the signing of Newcastle United star Alexander Isak instead of Dutch-Nigerian striker Joshua Zirkzee. Currently leading the Premier League table, Arsenal is seeking to bolster their attacking options this summer, with Zirkzee being heavily linked as a potential target. The Bologna forward's performances have captured the attention of the Gunners, who are reportedly prepared to make a £51m offer to secure his services, beating out other interested clubs in the process. Among these clubs are Italian giants AC Milan and Juventus, who are also vying for Zirkzee's signature, setting the stage for a competitive transfer battle.
In an exclusive interview with CaughtOffside via his Daily Briefing, Watts expressed his reservations about Zirkzee, suggesting that Arsenal could benefit more from signing Isak. He acknowledged the array of striking talents linked with Arsenal, including Isak and Napoli's Victor Osimhen, but highlighted Zirkzee as a lesser-known option. Despite Arsenal's reported interest in Zirkzee, Watts believes that Isak, whose potential move to Arsenal was first reported by Sam Dean of the Daily Telegraph in January, could offer a more immediate impact.
Watts admitted that he hasn't extensively watched Zirkzee play but noted his potential and the ongoing speculation surrounding his transfer. However, he emphasized the need for Arsenal to prioritize signings that can immediately elevate the squad's performance. While acknowledging Zirkzee's potential, Watts believes that Arsenal requires a forward capable of making an immediate impact, thus advocating for a pursuit of Isak.
Isak has been one of the standout performers in the Premier League this season, tallying 20 goals in 27 appearances, positioning him as the division's third-highest scorer. With only Chelsea's Cole Palmer and Manchester City's Erling Haaland ahead of him in the scoring charts, Isak's prowess in front of goal has been undeniable. In contrast, Zirkzee has registered 11 goals in Serie A this season, a significant distance from the league's leading scorer, Lautaro Martínez, who has netted 23 times.
