Liverpool manager Arne Slot has cautioned that Girona, despite their disappointing Champions League results, are a much stronger team than their performances suggest. While Liverpool sits at the top of the European standings with a perfect record, Girona is struggling in 30th place, having lost four out of five matches.
However, Slot, who has been closely following Girona's progress, believes their results don't accurately reflect their potential, especially considering their competitive form last season when they nearly contended for the Spanish title.
Slot praised Girona's achievements, particularly their close challenge for the league title last season despite their limited budget. He credited their manager, Michel, for the team's success and emphasized that Girona's current Champions League results don’t do justice to their abilities.
According to Slot, Girona has been unlucky in most of their European matches this season, with the exception of their loss to PSV, and they have shown quality despite their poor results.
In their Champions League debut, Girona suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain and a 3-2 defeat to Feyenoord, with the latter match taking place at Slot's former club. After a victory over Slovan Bratislava, they suffered losses to PSV and Sturm Graz, leaving them in a difficult position as they near elimination from the competition. Despite these setbacks, Slot remains convinced that Girona’s overall performance in the competition has been more competitive than their record shows.
Slot also noted that Liverpool would be able to field their strongest lineup for Tuesday's match against Girona, after the Premier League derby against Everton was called off due to a storm. With the team fully fit, Slot confirmed that there would be no need for rotation, and Liverpool would start with their strongest team.
The Dutch coach also provided an update on goalkeeper Alisson Becker, confirming that he is fit to play following a two-month injury layoff. Slot highlighted the importance of finishing in the top eight of their group to avoid additional fixtures, but he downplayed any potential advantage in the Premier League, noting that title rivals like Arsenal and Manchester City will likely also finish in the top eight.
