Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been handed a two-match touchline ban following his red card in the fiery 2-2 draw against Everton. The match, which saw Liverpool’s hopes of extending their lead in the Premier League dashed by a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer from James Tarkowski, was marred by a confrontation sparked by Abdoulaye Doucoure’s goal celebrations. Doucoure’s antics in front of the away fans led to a heated exchange with Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, which ultimately resulted in both players being dismissed.
Tensions escalated further as supporters flooded onto the pitch, prompting the intervention of stewards and police. During the chaos, referee Michael Oliver also sent off Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff for their involvement in the incident.
The Premier League issued a statement confirming that Slot’s dismissal was due to his use of "offensive, insulting, or abusive language," which led to his suspension from the touchline for two matches.
The suspension will affect Slot’s participation in Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures, including Sunday’s home match against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers and their away trip to Aston Villa on February 19. Meanwhile, both Doucoure and Jones will serve one-match bans for their involvement in the incident during the derby.
Despite the dramatic events, Liverpool's draw at Goodison Park leaves them seven points ahead of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League, with 14 games remaining in the season. The result marked the final Merseyside derby at the historic Goodison Park before Everton moves to their new stadium.
