Arnautovic Hails "Amazing" Euro 2024 as Austria Eyes Last-16 Spot

Posted : 24 June 2024

Austria's captain, Marko Arnautovic, reflected on the contrasting fortunes of his Euro experiences, describing his third championship as "amazing" following disappointments in previous editions. In Euro 2016, Austria managed just one goal and a single point, while in the Covid-delayed Euro 2020, they were ousted in the last-16 by Italy after extra time. Now, with a chance to secure a last-16 berth, Arnautovic and his team are focused on their upcoming match against the Netherlands in Berlin.

"For me, the first Euros weren't great. The second one was during Covid, so that wasn't great either. But this one has been amazing, lots of fun," shared the Inter Milan striker. "The optimal scenario would be to win tomorrow, and then we'll see, but most important is the game tomorrow."

Arnautovic, who scored in Austria's crucial 3-1 victory over Poland, emphasized the personal significance of facing the Dutch team. Having started his career in the Netherlands with FC Twente, he regards the country as a second home where he learned invaluable lessons. "It's special for me to play against the Oranje," he added. "Dutch people are very nice, I lived with a host family who treated me very well, and those three years were a great experience."

Austria's path forward hinges on their performance against the Netherlands. A win would secure a top-two finish in Group D, potentially setting up a clash with the runners-up from Group E. Coach Ralf Rangnick acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating, "I prefer to finish first, but realistically, we need to win and hope for France not to win against Poland, which isn't very likely." Despite the complexities of potential outcomes, the primary objective remains clear for Austria: securing passage to the last 16 and extending their best tournament run in decades.
