Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni expressed his ongoing amazement at his team's ability to secure victories after their 1-0 extra-time win over Colombia in the Copa America final on Sunday. This triumph makes Argentina the first South American team to win three consecutive major tournament titles. The Albiceleste followed up their 2021 Copa America victory with a World Cup win in 2022 and successfully defended their Copa title in the USA.
Spain is the only other team in international football history to have won a World Cup between two straight continental titles, with Euro wins in 2008 and 2012 bookending their 2010 World Cup triumph. Scaloni commented on his team's resilience, noting, "This team never ceases to surprise. They overcame the difficulties of a very challenging match, with a very tough opponent and despite a poor first half."
Scaloni expressed immense satisfaction in seeing the joy of Argentina's fans, saying, "I'm very happy because the people are happy, they have a moment of happiness and that's what the players play for. Those of us who manage the national team are here for the people to identify with the team." The game also marked a significant moment for winger Angel Di Maria, who announced his retirement after the tournament. Scaloni hinted at wanting Di Maria to make one final appearance on home soil to bid farewell to his fans.
Additionally, Scaloni shared a personal note about the double joy he felt on the day, as his wife Elisa is Spanish, and Spain had won over England in the Euro final in Berlin. "To have my family here, well, it's the best. They're twice as happy because Spain are also champions, so we're doubly happy, and it's been a special Sunday," he said.
