Argentina forward Lionel Messi to leave Paris St. Germain this summer
Posted : 03 May 2023
After his current contract expires this summer, Lionel Messi will leave Paris St. Germain.
The Argentine World Cup champion had a "agreement in principle" to remain another year, but neither the club nor the player are willing to sign the contract right now.
Due to financial difficulties, Messi is not certain that the club can compete at the highest level of European soccer, and the French champions want to concentrate on the development of new players.
He agreed to a two-year contract in Paris in 2021 with a one-year option, but that option will no longer be exercised.
It is believed that a few weeks ago, his father Jorge Messi told Luis Campos, the football advisor for Paris St. Germain.
The player thinks PSG's spending could be constrained in order to follow Financial Fair Play regulations next season, endangering the caliber of their team.
Messi's recent hesitation to sign a new contract has angered PSG's Qatari owners, who think his silence was a sign he didn't want to stay.
Due to his unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, the 35-year-old was given a two-week suspension by PSG.
Barcelona and Messi would like to bring the attacker back to the Nou Camp, but a transfer back "home" seems more doubtful as the La Liga leaders struggle financially.
