Following the conclusion of the 2023-2024 season, Portsmouth has revealed their retained and released list through an official statement on their website.
Portsmouth, a club well-regarded in Nigeria due to the successes of former Nigerian players Nwankwo Kanu and John Utaka, will be competing in the EFL Championship next season after securing the League One title with an impressive tally of 97 points from 46 matches.
Among the players returning to their parent clubs after the end of their loan spells is Faustino Anjorin, a former England youth international of Nigerian descent.
Chelsea now faces a crucial decision regarding Anjorin's future for the upcoming season, whether to retain him, offload him permanently, or send him out on loan again, as the young talent will enter the final year of his contract with the Blues in July 2024.
Anjorin's stint at Portsmouth marked his fourth loan spell, having previously been loaned out to Lokomotiv Moscow and Huddersfield Town twice.
Despite being considered a potential star for Chelsea's first team, Anjorin has been plagued by injuries in recent seasons, limiting his appearances to 40 since the start of the 2021-2022 campaign.
His last appearance for Chelsea dates back to February 2021, when he featured against Barnsley in the fifth round of the Emirates FA Cup.
In a separate development, Sam Folarin, another player eligible to represent Nigeria, has not been offered a new contract and will be seeking new opportunities elsewhere for the upcoming season.
