Ange Postecoglou has dismissed rumours linking him to the England managerial role, asserting he is solely focused on his duties at Tottenham. This speculation follows the Football Association's search for a new manager after Gareth Southgate stepped down following England's Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain. Postecoglou's name has surfaced among potential candidates, including England Under-21s coach Lee Carsley, Newcastle's Eddie Howe, and former Chelsea managers Mauricio Pochettino and Graham Potter, as well as ex-Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel.
Postecoglou, who had a successful first season with Tottenham, leading them to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League, could be a bold choice to replace Southgate. Known for his attacking style, Postecoglou's approach contrasts with Southgate's more cautious tactics, which faced criticism. Despite the speculation, the 58-year-old Australian emphasized that his focus remains firmly on Tottenham, especially as they began their pre-season with a commanding 5-1 victory over Scottish Premiership side Hearts.
In addressing the rumors, Postecoglou said, "I am at the start of pre-season and am the Tottenham manager, so I have got nothing else (on my mind) but trying to bring success to this football club. Until I do that, there is no point in me thinking about anything else. I had a nap this afternoon, so I have no idea what is going on (with the speculation)." Postecoglou, who managed Australia from 2013 to 2017, leading them to the 2014 World Cup and winning the Asia Cup, joined Tottenham in 2023 after a successful tenure with Celtic.
When asked about a possible return to international management, Postecoglou remained non-committal but reflective. "I enjoyed my time (with Australia). I had four great years. We won the Asia Cup and qualified for the World Cup, but with all these things there is always a natural end, and I thought it was a natural end for me there. I loved coaching the national team. In the future, who knows? Five years ago, I was in Japan, and now I am in the Premier League." As England prepares for their first post-Euros match against the Republic of Ireland in the Nations League on September 7, the FA might appoint Lee Carsley as an interim manager if a permanent successor to Southgate is not found in time.
