Ancelotti criticizes Real Madrid's hectic schedule says “Something has to change”

Posted : 23 April 2023
Real Madrid's hectic schedule across three competitions has been criticized by Carlo Ancelotti, who asserts that "something has to change" to safeguard the health of the players.

While continuing to trail LaLiga leader Barcelona, Madrid will face Osasuna in the Copa del Rey final on May 6 before hosting Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal three days later on May 9.

The current European champions defeated Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday to go to the semifinals of the Champions League for the eleventh time in the previous 13 years.

"Objectively, the calendar doesn't make sense," Ancelotti said in a news conference on Friday ahead of Madrid's LaLiga game with Celta Vigo. "It's too tight, with too many games. We have to look at the health of the players.

"They're the most important part of football, but everyone thinks about themselves: the league think about themselves, the federation think about themselves, FIFA think about themselves, UEFA think about themselves. It isn't good for football. It isn't right. Something has to change. Too many games."

The high-profile matchup between Madrid and City will be the third time in the past three years that the two teams have competed in Europe.

In the 2020 round of 16, City triumphed 4-2 on aggregate, and in a dramatic semifinal, Madrid triumphed 6-5 on aggregate.
