Defending champions Real Madrid faced a surprising setback in the Champions League, suffering a 1-0 defeat to Lille on Wednesday, and manager Carlo Ancelotti acknowledged the need to accept the ensuing criticism.
The match was marked by Lille's relentless pressing, which culminated in a penalty scored by Jonathan David during first-half stoppage time. This loss marked the first for Ancelotti’s side in all competitions since January, leaving them with three points after two matches following their initial victory against VfB Stuttgart.
Analyzing the performance, Ancelotti expressed disappointment, stating, “Everything was pretty bad.” He noted that although the team appeared compact defensively in the first half, they struggled to regain possession and transition effectively.
Despite efforts to adopt a more aggressive approach, the team found it challenging to gain momentum. The manager emphasized the importance of maintaining a cool perspective and recognizing the areas requiring improvement.
Ancelotti conceded that Lille deserved their victory, despite Real Madrid showing some improvement in the second half. He remarked, “It was difficult for us to get into the game at the level of intensity, at the level of duels, at the level of clarity of play.”
He acknowledged that while Real had opportunities to equalize late in the game, the performance did not warrant a point. He reiterated the importance of learning from defeats, encouraging his players to focus on the clear areas that need enhancement.
Currently, Real Madrid sits second in LaLiga with 18 points and will look to rebound when they host third-placed Villarreal on Saturday. The team will be eager to capitalize on their home advantage and rectify the mistakes made in the match against Lille to regain their winning form.
