Amunike speaks out after losing Super Eagles job to Finidi

Posted : 02 May 2024

Emmanuel Amunike, the former Africa Footballer of the Year in 1994, has broken his silence following the appointment of Finidi George as the new head coach of the Super Eagles by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Initially considered a frontrunner for the position, Amunike had been widely expected to succeed Jose Peseiro, especially after indications that the NFF preferred a Nigerian coach over a foreign one.

With an impressive coaching record that included leading Nigeria to victory in the FIFA U17 World Cup and coaching various clubs across Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Egypt, and Nigeria, as well as guiding Tanzania to the 2019 AFCON, Amunike seemed poised for the role compared to Enyimba coach Finidi.

However, the NFF opted for Finidi, citing the importance of continuity, as he had served as Peseiro’s assistant during the 2023 AFCON, where Nigeria finished as runners-up.

Amunike, however, suggests that his exclusion from the role may have been orchestrated by certain football officials in Nigeria who harbor ill feelings towards him due to past conflicts.

The former Barcelona player alleges that these individuals may have influenced the media to spread false reports aimed at tarnishing his reputation after he applied for the coaching position.

Despite facing these challenges, Amunike remains resolute, emphasizing that he will not be deterred by propaganda and insisting that coaching the national team is not a matter of life or death.

Amunike brings to light his coaching experience with Nigeria's youth teams, having previously managed the Golden Eaglets and Flying Eagles on separate occasions.

Additionally, he served as an assistant coach for the Super Eagles under Augustine Eguavoen during the unsuccessful qualification campaign for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
